Best Multiplayer Math Games for Classroom Competition
Competition is one of the most powerful motivators in a classroom, and one of the easiest to get wrong. Done well, it gets every student working harder. Done badly, it shows the same few kids winning and everyone else giving up.
Students love to compete. The trick is setting it up so the competition is between teams, the outcome stays in doubt, and everyone has a reason to keep trying.
What makes classroom competition healthy
- Teams, not individuals. Head-to-head races between two students tend to end with one of them giving up. Teams share the wins and the misses.
- Comebacks are possible. Games with stealing, bonuses or risky choices keep trailing teams in it.
- Strategy matters, not just speed. When choices matter, the fastest calculator doesn't automatically win.
- Short rounds. A new round is a fresh start for everyone.
Multiplayer games built for competition
Every Fletcher Math game is for 1 to 6 players or teams on one shared screen. These are the most competitive:
- Math Mogul (grades 3–8): Buy properties, trade, collect rent and own color sets.
- Math Racing League (grades 3–8): Choose Easy, Medium or Hard problems to move 2, 4 or 6 spaces, with boosts and roadblocks along the way.
- Algebra Wizards (grades 6–8): Duel other wizards by simplifying expressions and solving equations.
- Solve-It Showdown (Algebra 1): Capture outlaws by solving equations. Missed bounties go up for the next player.
- If-Then Courtroom (Geometry): Win logic cases, and the next player can shout "Objection!" to steal one.
- Transformation Battleship (grades 7–8): Transform your cannon to sink hidden ships on the coordinate plane.
- Who's Multiplying? (grades 3–5): A four-in-a-row duel with multiplication facts.
Keep it friendly
- Shuffle teams every few weeks so the same group isn't always on top.
- Celebrate good strategy and good explanations, not just the winning team.
- End every game with a quick handshake or "good game" between teams.
